Step-by-step tutorial on how to manually merge Printful products in Shopify using Merges and reassign them in Printful to synchronize stock levels and fulfillment.
Printful identifies products by Shopify variant ID. After a merge, the new variant IDs do not match anything in Printful, and stock and fulfillment will break unless the merged product is connected back to the original Printful variants.
The supported setup uses two Merges features together: Sync original products mirrors inventory and pricing from the original Printful-linked variants onto the merged variants, and Order routing rewrites outgoing orders to use the original variant IDs so Printful can fulfill them.
Select the Printful-linked source products in your Shopify admin and run the merge as you would for any other products. See the User manual for the full merge flow.
After saving, the source products are archived automatically. Do not delete them - Sync original products and Order routing both rely on the archived originals.
The panel shows a "Syncing N of M location" indicator. The location count you can sync is plan-gated:

If you use Printful alongside other 3PLs or warehouses, pick the locations that matter most within your plan's allowance.
In the same Settings panel, enable Route orders to originals under Order routing.
With this enabled, every new order containing a merged variant is rewritten before it reaches Printful: the merged variant is swapped for its original Printful-linked variant so Printful sees an ID it recognizes and fulfills the order normally. Customers see the merged product they bought.
Archived, not Draft or deleted.Pause Printful's automatic product import, delete the duplicated listings, and keep only the merged products and their archived originals. Reimporting from Printful after a merge recreates the source products and fragments your inventory.
