2048 variants, one product: how Merges unlocks Shopify's new limit
Shopify lifted the 100-variant cap to 2048. Merges lets you merge products into one native Shopify product – simple, clean, and limitless.
A detailed overview of every field Merges imports, consolidates and manages during the merging process, from titles and variants to metafields and reviews.
Unlike bundling solutions, Merges ensures the merged products are fully compatible with all Shopify features, including Shopify POS, third-party apps, and integrations. This approach guarantees that your store operates seamlessly while retaining the flexibility and scalability Shopify offers.
To ensure transparency and help you fully understand the scope of Merges' capabilities, here is a detailed list of all the data Merges imports, consolidates, and manages during the merging process:
Combines and optimizes product titles for clarity and SEO.
Generates cohesive descriptions using AI, incorporating details from all selected products.
Merges product images, with an automatic feature to remove pixel-identical duplicates. Shopify allows up to 250 images per product - Merges respects this limit and will surface a clear warning if a merge would exceed it.
Handles external videos hosted on YouTube or Vimeo and videos uploaded directly to Shopify.
Consolidates pricing information, offering flexibility in managing merged product pricing.
Combines SKU details, crucial for inventory tracking and management.
Aggregates barcode information, essential for sales and logistics.
Unifies inventory counts and stock levels across locations.
If Sync original products (Settings) is enabled, ongoing changes on the source products continue to propagate to the merged variants after the merge. See Managing inventory after product merging.
Consolidates shipping information, including:
Combines product options (e.g., color, size) with AI to determine option names and values based on existing variant data, product titles, descriptions, and tags.
Unifies all variants, ensuring a comprehensive listing of available product variations.
Merges product categories, aiding in organized store navigation.
Combines product types for better product classification and filtering.
Unifies products into collections, automatically removing duplicates to streamline collection management.
Merges tags from all selected products, with duplicates automatically removed for efficient search and organization.
Consolidates vendor information to maintain consistency across merged products.
The merged product is created with Active status. Source products are set to Archived after the merge is saved.
Combines visibility settings across sales channels to maintain consistent product display.
Ensures the merged product is published to the correct sales channels (e.g., Online Store, POS, Buy Button, custom apps), preserving and unifying channel-specific configurations.
Consolidates all media assets, including images and videos, associated with the products being merged.
Supports merging of custom metafields, ensuring additional product data is retained and transferred accurately. Metafields must be defined through Shopify's metafield definitions (namespace, key, type, and validation) for Merges to recognize and transfer them. Legacy unstructured metafields - values stored without a matching definition - cannot be reliably carried across, because Shopify no longer exposes them to apps in a stable way.
If a metafield is not transferring, the most common cause is a missing definition in Settings -> Metafields and metaobjects in your Shopify admin.
Review apps that store reviews in Shopify metafields have their data carried across during the merge.
Judge.me stores reviews in its own database. Judge.me no longer permits third-party apps to transfer reviews between products via its API. To keep Judge.me reviews connected to a merged product, use Judge.me's Product Groups feature to link the merged product to the archived source products. A native Merges integration for Product Groups is planned for a future release. See the full guide: Keeping Judge.me reviews on merged Shopify products.
Automatically generates redirects from original product URLs to the new merged product URL, ensuring a smooth customer experience and maintaining SEO value. This feature is available exclusively in PRO & UNLIMITED plans.
